Better Than I Deserve

First week of classes

I helped my sis edit her paper last night, so I am a little tired, but I figured this was an appropriate place to reflect on how my first week at Full Sail has been. The last 4 days have really been a whirlwind, but so far I am still finding myself more relaxed than when I was working 40 hrs a week and going to DMACC in Iowa. Lol

jerclass1Creative writing class is pretty much candy to me so far. The lectures have been minimal with lots of brainstorming, followed by labs were we were told to adapt a weird/freaky news summary into a 700 word short story. I was a little nervous that my undiagnosed ADD would make it difficult for me to test or write in a class of over 100 people, but testing hasn’t been an issue and we are allowed to use headphones. The course schedule is strange- like they said it would be- but due to lack of heavy homework or studying right now, it feels like a walk in the park. If my mother (or any parent from Grace E-free Church) is reading this, I am proud to say I have not yet been late to class. The plan is to get there early, of course! You know me! :P

Our photography professor is hilarious and teaches from memory, so he is very engaging, and he gives us the slides he goes over in class. Photography lab is fun, since each lab we are just developing the pictures we took from the previous day. So far I don’t have any masterpieces, but I will need to have 6 very specific types of pictures by the end of the month for my final portfolio. Still working on it…

So the classes have been good, but the REALLY INTERESTING parts of the day have been the interruptions! Yep, so far we have had 2 “guest speaker” events that required our class time. The first day of creative writing, we were able to spend almost 2 hrs of class time in the auditorium with Pete Travis, the director of Vantage Point. I was able to get a front row seat and he welcomed out questions.

Then yesterday, we had 2 Development Executives from the Florida based production company, Pink Sneakers, visit our photography class with an offer. On December third, they will be back at Full Sail to give us the opportunity to pitch an idea for a reality show. (Their major successes have been reality tv, and they are always looking for ideas.) We get at least 5-10 mins to pitch a few ideas and we have to have a treatment ready for them to read over for each one. If my idea(s) is selected, I receive $500, and if it is developed into a show- $5,000! I realize it is a slim chance that my idea is selected over 100 other students in my class- most of whom watch reality tv, apparently. Still, I am pretty excited. But I am also hungry, so I am going to eat breakfast/lunch and will continue this later.

After a 9pm to 1am photo lab tonight, I will have free time all weekend and Monday. (Maybe we will take some flip video at the beach!)

A cheap life

"There is a common, worldly kind of Christianity in this day, which many have, and think they have enough – a cheap Christianity which offends nobody, and requires no sacrifice – which costs nothing, and is worth nothing. " -J.C. Ryle (Holiness, Baker, 1979, p. 204.)
In Junior High, I was given an opportunity to make and present a video for my class about the French and Indian War or write a report on the subject. The obvious choice was to have fun and act in a fun video than do actual research, so my group chose that option. I have to write about the experience because it changed my life forever.
